Stress Project

Overview

The primary objective of this study will be to measure the effects of breath rate as a tool for stress regulation, using behavioral and physiological measures of stress and emotion regulation.

Findings can suggest potential interventions for stress and self-regulatory processes.

The purpose of this study is to enhance research that may support the use of breath regulation as a form of stress intervention and to provide better intervention options for students that suffer from high levels of stress.

You are being asked to participate in this study because you have identified as a high stress individual (aged 18+) and have not been diagnosed with any major psychiatric disorders including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

This criteria excludes depression and anxiety disorders.

Study Details

Your participation in this study will last up to two weeks and includes three visits.

During the first session you will:

  • Participate in relaxation training,
  • Complete questionnaires about sleep, stress, anxiety and emotions, and
  • Complete some physiological measures.

Sensors will be applied to parts of your torso in order to measure breath rate along with heart rate during these activities.

For the third lab visit, we will ask you to complete similar questionnaires and physiological measures. Each session will last about an hour, making your visit a total of three hours.
